Becky has lived in supported living for the past 12 years. She has always been naturally quite shy, and sometimes finds it difficult to get her words out. However, her Support Worker, Andrea, noticed she enjoys one-to-one interactions and traveling to different places, which helps her to feel more confident and engaged.
Becky’s confidence has grown over time, and she has developed her own coping strategies for communication, such as writing daily notes, journaling, and using her phone to express herself when she struggles to speak.
Recently, Becky was supported to go on a trip to the Cotswolds. She didn’t need a lot of support from Andrea in deciding where to go, and what to see and do.
She showed independence in choosing the holiday, confidence in managing new experiences, and enjoyment in both the social and personal aspects of the trip. She particularly valued the opportunity to relax, explore, and enjoy the scenery.
Becky’s experience exemplifies how, with adequate support, inclusion, and encouragement, independence can develop, fostering the growth of essential life skills, confidence, and overall well-being.
