Beyond Words: The Invisible Language of Connection 

Communication happens every single day—usually without us even realising it. We use it to share ideas, send messages, and express emotions. 

Yet, too often, our understanding of communication begins and ends with speech. In social care, that mindset creates a barrier. When communication is only recognised in traditional ways, the individuals we support can be misunderstood, overlooked, or spoken for instead of listened to. 

Every day, we navigate a mix of communication channels: 

Research suggests that 60% to 70% of all human communication happens completely non-verbally. For mostly neurotypical humans, our bodies speak a silent language. We instinctively “read the room,” guard our personal space, and unconsciously “mirror” the body language of someone we connect with. 

But for many autistic or neurodiverse individuals, the brain processes these channels completely differently. 

Shifting the Frequency: The Neurodiverse Brain 

Imagine trying to listen to words, decode facial expressions, ignore the humming of a loud fluorescent light, and maintain eye contact all at once. It can cause massive cognitive overload. 

When working with neurodiverse individuals or those with learning disabilities, the “standard rules” change: 

The Processing Pause: It can take longer for a neurodiverse brain to translate sound into meaning. A three-second silence might be misinterpreted by a neurotypical person as a lack of interest, when in reality, it is just essential processing time. 

Eye Contact: Neurotypically, eye contact equals listening. But tracking studies show that even neurotypical people only lock eyes for about 3.5% of a casual conversation. For a neurodiverse brain, forced eye contact can cause sensory overload. Better signs of engagement might be a relaxed posture, a tilted head, or unique vocalisations. 

Because our world is predominantly designed around neurotypical standards, neurodiverse individuals can spend a lot of daily cognitive energy masking—forcing themselves to mimic typical social rules just to get by. It can be exhausting. Imagine trying to navigate a foreign country in a new language. 

Interestingly, this friction isn’t the same when neurodiverse individuals communicate with each other. Dialect can shift entirely: directness is kindness, sharing a personal story shows empathy, and there is no need to “perform” listening.  

This is what psychologists call the Double Empathy Problem. It proves that communication breakdowns aren’t caused by a single person’s ‘deficit’, but simply by two different types of brains using two completely different communication systems. When neurodiverse people talk to each other, they communicate beautifully. You can sit in silence, look away, and still be completely connected. 

The Responsibility Sits With Us 

Too often, society expects individuals to adapt to systems that were never designed with them in mind. At Wilf Ward, we believe the responsibility should sit with us.

Because behaviour is often communication before it is anything else.

What is their body really trying to tell you? 

What does it feel like to be heard?
