Helena loves everything Westlife and watches Westlife DVDs and music videos of Westlife daily, owns Westlife T-shirts and mugs and appears to be one of Helena’s favourite interests. She responds well to listening to their music, and has previously enjoyed theatre performances, and socialising in the community. Therefore, her Support Workers decided it would be beneficial for her to attend a performance of a Westlife tribute band in a local pub.
To reduce Helena’s anxiety in the lead up to the event, it was kept as a surprise for Helena. When she was told she was going to see the band, she was elated! She had a wonderful time at the concert – her excitement and joy only grew as she was smiling and pointing at the singers as they came out on stage, singing a Westlife song she recognised. Helena was very engaged in the event and communicated with other fans there as well as dancing throughout the evening.
One of the lead singers of the band even came over to Helena and danced with her for one of her favourite Westlife songs – this was such a special moment for Helena, and she has been talking about it ever since. Overall, this was an amazing and meaningful experience for Helena, which she massively enjoyed and gained a lot from experiencing.
This story is a testament to the incredible progress that can be made when we focus on the individual needs and preferences of those we support. By empowering Helena to focus on something she loves, and get out in the community we are helping her achieve a richer, more fulfilling life.
